Making these paintings was a discovery process. While the images of shells and heads on beaches were clear, I was in unknown territory concerning the human experience. I wanted to understand the history that I had not personally experienced. I read, from first-hand accounts of the Middle Passage, through Reconstruction, Jim Crow, and also how contemporary Black authors interpreted their own history. All this helped contextualize the visual stories I was uncovering.
